School / Playground Safety:

Project Idea 1 – Rubber Speed Bumps, Cross Walk Signs, etc. - * Not Funded by the PTSA *

Purchase rubber speed bumps, cross walk signs, etc. to make walking and driving to Arbor Heights safer. Work with the transportation department on this plan.
Estimated cost of project: $18,000.00
$2,400 per speed bump; $15,000 for a flashing cross walk; $2,000 for two lanes of smaller white bumps.

Hire someone to act as a crossing guard for the crosswalk on 35th and 104th.

Clean weeds out of cracks in asphalt on playground and seal cracks.

Aerate and over seed “lawn” with EcoTurf. Add mulch around tree bases ($300).

Replace rotting wood railroad ties with either a concrete ribbon, Trex or other “soft” edging material.

Project Idea 10 – Window Film and/or Insulating Blinds - * Funded by the PTSA *

Place window film (heat reflection) on windows of south side classrooms, including room 9. Or purchase and install insulating blinds. Note: If the school district replaces the windows (as they agreed to do), then the window film should be done afterwards.

Project Idea 11 – Air Conditioning for Classrooms - * Not Funded by the PTSA *

Room 25 often gets up to 90 degrees when it is in the mid 70s outside. With 30 kids, we are really struggling. This is a problem with several of the classrooms.

Project Idea 12 – Spanish Translator - * already provided by school *

Spanish translator to translate homework assignments etc for teachers. 10 hours per week.
Estimated cost of project: $6,000 ($200/week x 30 weeks)

Project Idea 13 – DVD/VCR Combination Players - * Funded by the PTSA *

DVD/VCR combination players for each classroom and the library.
Estimated cost of project: $100 x number of classrooms.

Project Idea 14 – Poster Printer and Cold Laminator - * Not Funded by the PTSA *

This printer makes posters in seconds from 8.5 x 11 originals. No ink is necessary as the paper is heat treated. Uses include classroom and school rules, lesson charts, PTSA programs, etc. Creates banners up to 100’ long.
Estimated cost of project: $8,159.40
Cost includes: printer, paper, poster sleeves, cold laminator, role of laminate, extra supply of paper (14 rolls) setup and training session.

Project Idea 15 – Color Printer for Computer Lab - * Funded by the PTSA *

It would be great to have a color printer in the computer lab (with USB or camera ports). It is hard to show the kids color differences with shades of gray, specifically in science and math activities. An example would be a Costco HP Printer with extra ink cartridges in storage (at least 6). We could also print out color pictures of students in academic activities and creating journals with color copies.

Project Idea 16 – Kindergarten Garden Boxes - * Funded by the PTSA *

Repair / replace existing planter boxes in the kindergarten garden in the courtyard.

Project Idea 17 – Kindergarten Tutor / Assistant - * Funded by the PTSA *

Hire a teaching assistant or tutor for the two kindergarten classes. 5 days x 3 hours of help.

Project Idea 18 –Bus for Kindergarten Field Trips - * Funded by the PTSA *

Fund the kindergarten classes with a bus for field trips. Because of seat belt laws, we are not allowed to transport kindergarten students in private cars without car seats/booster seats for everyone. Other grades are able to go on more field trips because they can travel by car with parent drivers

Project Idea 19 – Flat Screen Monitors - * Not Funded by the PTSA *

Purchase of 12 – 17” LCD monitors for the computers in Room 12. This classroom is a model observed worldwide as an example of technology integration – also used for some staff training.

Project Idea 20 – Time Magazine for Kids - * Funded by the PTSA *

Weekly news magazine for intermediate students.

Project Idea 21 – Add ¼ day Instrumental Music - * Funded by the PTSA *

Continue to “partially” fund instrumental music. Dr. Reineke needs $3,500 to add ¼ day of instruction.

Project Idea 22 – Books for the “Global Reading Challenge” - * Funded by the PTSA *

Beginning in December, 4th and 5th graders will begin reading the 10 books which will be part of this years’ “Global Reading Challenge”. We would like to buy extra copies of each of the books to ensure participation by all of the students.

Project Idea 23 – 12 Microscopes for Classes - * Being provided by an anonymous donation *

The 4th and 5th grade teachers would love to have a dozen microscopes. (Ms. Boitano knows which kind specifically.) The 12 microscopes would be shared among the teachers.

Project Idea 24 – Physical Education Roller & Inline Skates - * money already raised by school *

Purchase 40 pairs of skates (1/2 roller skates, 1/2 inline skates). 20 pairs of roller skates is $500; 20 pairs of inline skates is $700.

English speaking parents partnering with Spanish speaking parents. Encourage English speaking parents who speak some Spanish to be involved.

Spanish classes for the children. (Great for recruitment as well!)

Help low income students with scholarships for the Art Wizards class.

Project Idea 28 – Cooling for the Computer Room - * Funded by the PTSA *

Air conditioner in the computer room. It gets tremendously hot and we need to protect the computers.

Project Idea 29 – Robot Wars Contest - * Not Funded by the PTSA *

Invite kids to create battle bots from standard radio controlled cars. These can be cheap mini R/C cars for less than $10. It will stimulate engineering and creativity. The contest may need some funding for setup.
